INFORMATION ABOUT THE AIRCRAFT
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber developed for the US Army Air Corps (USAAC) before World War II.
The primary mission of the B-17 was strategic daylight pinpoint bombing against German industrial and civilian targets. In Operation Pointblank, which was conducted prior to the Normandy landings, the US 8th Air Fleet based in England and the 15th Air Fleet based in Italy served as a complement to RAF Bomber Command's night area bombing. B-17s were also used in the Pacific wars, albeit to a lesser extent. The B-17s were nicknamed Flying Fortresses because of the .50 caliber machine guns mounted on each corner and on the upper and lower turrets.
